What a metal move does to a reel
Cable is a manufactured product with a commodity at its core, and the two move on completely different clocks. Copper repriced twice while you read this sentence. The jacket compound, the mill run and the freight did not. That is why a reel of 16 AWG four-conductor control cable, carrying three times the copper of a Cat 5e reel, reacts three times as hard in dollars to the same market move, while a plenum-jacketed cable with identical copper barely flinches, because so much of its cost sits in the compound rather than the conductor. Most distributors handle this by moving everything the same percentage and hoping it averages out. It does not. It overcharges on the light constructions and undercharges on the heavy ones, and the error compounds every time the market runs. We price each construction against its own metal content, which is why we quote against the market rather than a fixed list, and why the numbers above are on this page at all.
